No. Although cupping may leave marks, they are called just that – cupping marks. They are not actually bruises and go away typically within four to seven days. Not everyone gets marks following cupping sessions and they are not dangerous or anything to worry about. According to Eastern medicine, the cupping mark determines the amount of congestion in the area being treated.
No one who has a fear of needles will ever be expected to receive a dry needling treatment. It is completely up to the individual being treated if they want to proceed with a recommended treatment.
There are several words people use to describe dry needling such as poking, pressure, or pinching. Rarely do people say it actually hurts.
This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions. Both acupuncture and dry needling use a solid filament needle; however, the uses of a solid filament needle for acupuncture and dry needling are very different. The differences are evident in the evaluation tools used by the practitioner, the assessment, the application, and the overall intended goal. Acupuncture is a treatment based on Eastern medical diagnosis where needles are inserted into specific points that lie along meridians channels) of the body through life force, or “qi” (pronounced “chee”) flows. The overall goal is to restore normal flow of the life force. In contrast, dry needling is rooted in Western medical philosophy which revolves around a practitioner using a needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate the underlying myofascial trigger points (spasms) and muscular and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments.
